Unveiling the Struggle for Freedom: “Voices of the New Belarus” Exhibition at Tulane University

February 20, 2024

In the wake of the tragic demise of Alexei Navalny during his imprisonment, the global community stands at a pivotal moment to amplify its voice against the unjust incarceration of political prisoners in Belarus and Russia. It’s a time to galvanize action and awareness around the critical issue of political repression and to lend our voices to those silenced by authoritarian regimes.

The Carroll Gallery at Tulane University, New Orleans, is honored to present “Voices of the New Belarus,” an exhibition that brings to the forefront the harrowing experiences and indomitable spirit of Belarusian political prisoners and the oppressed. This exhibition, a collaborative endeavor with Yale University and featuring contributions from Belarusian and American artists, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tyranny.

Exhibition Highlights:

  • Video Art Showcase: Explore the Belarusian Revolution of 2020 through the lens of Andrei Kureichik’s video art, inspired by the documentary play “Voices of the New Belarus.”
  • Art Installation: Witness the compelling installation by Diana Сupsa, capturing the essence of resistance and hope.
  • Theatrical Performance: Directed by Moscow Nights’ Natasha O. Ramer, this performance brings to life the voices of those who endure the shadows of the Belarusian totalitarian regime.
  • Contributions from Academics and Actors: Esteemed Yale professors Timothy Snyder, Marcy Shore, Jason Stanley, along with actors from the Yale School of Drama and talents from New Orleans and Los Angeles, unite to breathe life into the stories of the oppressed. Among those highlighted are Ales Bialiatski, Nobel laureate; Maria Kolesnikova, celebrated musician; Nikolai Statkevich, renowned politician; and numerous Belarusians who dared to dream of freedom.

Special Events:

  • Public Lecture: Join Belarusian playwright and Sakharov Prize laureate Andrei Kureichik on February 22 at 17:00 for an enlightening lecture. Special guest Ambassador Pavel Latushko will also share insights into the ongoing struggle for democracy in Belarus.
  • Theatrical Presentation: Experience the powerful narrative of “Voices of the New Belarus” through a dynamic theatrical presentation, followed by a reception.
