Moscow Nights is proud to once again participate in GiveNOLA Day 2026 – Tuesday, May 5th, a powerful day of giving that uplifts the cultural heartbeat of New Orleans and beyond. This year, your donation will directly support our upcoming international stage-to-screen project, Searching for Akhmatova — a multimedia theatrical film exploring art, resistance, and memory through the words of legendary Russian poet Anna Akhmatova.

Our Journey So Far

Thanks to your generous support during our previous GiveNOLA’s, we created a Ukrainian multimedia theatre piece that connected hearts across borders and was performed at Tulane University’s Lupin Theatre in November 2022. That performance became the foundation for a hybrid “theater on film” production — a format we are continuing and evolving with Searching for Akhmatova.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and theatre artist Anthony Sandoval (Garland and LA Weekly Awards), our new work will blend poetic performance, historical imagery, and cinematic storytelling. Learn more about Sandoval’s global work at www.itlcreative.com/bios.

Why This Project, Now?

As the world continues to witness the devastating war in Ukraine and the erosion of truth in public discourse, the words of Anna Akhmatova — who endured Stalin’s censorship and refused to be silenced — take on urgent relevance. This project not only revives her voice but offers a global conversation on the role of artists in resisting tyranny and preserving humanity.

How Your Donation Helps

Your contribution on GiveNOLA Day will go directly toward:

Final filming and post-production of Searching for Akhmatova

Educational outreach, including free screenings and cultural discussions

Oleksandra Basko’s A Non-Fictional War – Natasha O. Ramer

Oleksandra Basko’s script narrates with blind brutality the Russian-Ukrainian war and Putin’s large-scale invasion. A dark and furious film that places us with merciless premeditation in the epicentre of horror, daring to delve into many of those collateral effects that a war brings at a family or marital level. Because war is not only a propitious context for degrading and / or heroic acts.

Far from it. War debases us all. War is an unbeatable breeding ground for a multitude of small scoundrels and is capable of devaluing our moral principles to unsuspected limits.

It is in the small details of Oleksandra Basko’s memoirs, in her desperation, confusion and loneliness, intensely human and emotional, where we understand all the crudeness of war experienced by a woman. We look uneasily through a keyhole, from a privileged position like voyeurs, at the influence of war on the thoughts, emotions, customs, desires, feelings, passions and behaviour of the sufferers Erin Cessna and Casey D. Groves, through uncomfortable dialogues and an intimate theatrical staging.

The main couple has abandoned the city where they lived and their professional work in order to escape the invasion and the bombings to protect their children.

They have opted for tranquility, isolation, life in the countryside and self-sufficiency, living among their memories of the past, the daily routine, the usual frictions of life together and their own personal and couple frustrations. The cruel, hurtful and monstrous reality of war is recreated through the lights and shadows on the stage by the imaginative cinematographer Antony Sandoval, using all the elements he had in his pantry with wisdom, economy and precision, reserving the close-ups of his excellent actors for the epilogue of the film.

Natasha O. Ramer succeeds in showing the harshness of war, its destruction and desolation, how it is governed by absurd impulses and feeds hatred, desires for revenge and unfounded reprisals. The film defends peace and the end of war with an optimistic, hopeful and humanistic look:

“Mom, remember you told me that our entire life is just a dream that God dreams?”

Oleksandra Basko believes in God, loves her family and

When people were going to the gallows, it was easy to see the difference between those who believed in something, facing death with integrity, honour and pride, and those who believed in nothing, totally frightened and collapsing pathetically before the emptiness that awaited them.

In Skammen (1968), Liv Ullmann said …

What is your film about?

In the first hours following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the world as we knew it shifted. Like so many, I was in shock — but what pierced me most deeply was a war diary I received from a young woman in Vinnytsia, Ukraine. Her words were not political analysis; they were immediate, intimate, and raw — the lived experience of invasion unfolding in real time.

The diary left a profound impression on me. I felt an urgent responsibility to give her voice a stage.

I created a theatrical work based on the first six days of her diary. We presented it once before a live audience, and during that performance we filmed the production with three cameras. What began as an act of artistic solidarity unexpectedly evolved into something far larger than we anticipated.

Out of that single performance, our theatre-on-film — an experimental hybrid of stage and cinema — was born. The film developed organically and unpredictably, carrying the urgency and emotional immediacy of those first six days into a cinematic form.

What are your ambitions with your project?

My ambition has always been that this theatrical work, transformed into a film, could reach audiences far beyond its local origins. I envisioned the film traveling first through national and international film festivals, allowing global audiences to encounter this deeply human story. Ultimately, my hope is that it will find a home on an international streaming platform, where viewers may continue discovering it for years to come.

What makes this journey especially meaningful is that the film was created by a small, regional New Orleans–based theatre company working with extraordinary local professional actors Erin Cessna and Casey D. Groves, Cinematographer and Post-Production Editor Antony Sandoval and Executive Director Murrell Ray White, Jr. From modest beginnings, we demonstrated that artists rooted in a local community can create work with universal resonance. Nearly two years later, the film’s continued presence in national and international festivals has proven that a locally born artistic response to world events can evolve into a truly global success story.

How was the shooting? What pleasantly surprised you?

We initially filmed a theatrical performance presented before a small live audience, simply hoping to preserve the immediacy of the stage experience. What followed surprised us completely.

We soon discovered that transforming a theatrical performance into a true cinematic work required an extraordinary commitment of time, precision, and artistic labor. The post-production process — editing, shaping rhythm, refining sound, and constructing visual continuity from multiple camera perspectives — demanded far more effort than we had ever anticipated.

Looking back, we were genuinely astonished by the immense number of hours devoted to post-production. Yet it was precisely this painstaking work that allowed the film to transcend its theatrical origins and ultimately grow into an international success story.

For what target group is your film?

Our film is intended for general audiences worldwide. While it emerges from a specific historical moment — the early days of the war in Ukraine — its themes are universal: family, resilience, fear, hope, and the human capacity to endure during times of crisis. We believe the emotional truth of the story allows viewers from different cultures, generations, and backgrounds to connect with it on a deeply personal level.

How would you specify your work? What characterizes your film?

Our work revives and reimagines the “theatre-on-film” format — a hybrid form that bridges the immediacy of live performance with the language of cinema. We began with a staged theatrical presentation, but through the creative possibilities of multi-camera filming and extensive post-production editing, the project evolved into an experimental film.
What characterizes the film is this dynamic tension between stage and screen. It preserves the emotional intensity and authenticity of live theatre while embracing cinematic tools — editing rhythm, framing, and sound design — to deepen the audience’s experience. The result is not simply a filmed play, but a deliberately crafted hybrid work that explores the expressive boundaries between theatre and film.

Why did you decide to become a filmmaker?

The answer may sound deceptively simple: Covid!

When the pandemic shuttered theatres around the world and live performance became impossible, I faced a profound artistic crossroads. After more than fifty years in live theatre as a Theater Director, my life’s language is the stage. Suddenly, that language had no physical home.

Rather than remain still, I chose to step fully into the 21ST century. I began exploring how a “theatre-on-film” approach — blended with experimental cinematic techniques — could preserve the intimacy and emotional immediacy of theatre while reaching audiences beyond closed venues.

For me, becoming a filmmaker was not an abandonment of theatre, but an evolution of it. It was a leap — personally and artistically — into a new medium that allowed storytelling to continue when the stage went dark.

Who is your greatest role model?

Steven Spielberg. His work demonstrates the extraordinary power of cinema to unite artistry with emotional accessibility. Spielberg has the rare ability to tell deeply personal human stories while reaching global audiences across cultures and generations.

As someone who transitioned from a lifelong career in theatre into filmmaking, I admire how he combines technical mastery with profound humanity. His films remind me that cinema, at its best, is not only spectacle — it is empathy, memory, and shared human experience.

Which movies are your favorites? Why?

Each decade of my life has brought new cinematic discoveries and new artistic inspirations. My favorite films span cultures and eras, reflecting my lifelong dialogue between theatre, literature, and cinema.

Among them are Roman Holiday, directed by William Wyler and starring Audrey Hepburn, for its elegance, humanity, and timeless emotional simplicity; Claude Lelouch’s French Classic, A Man and a Woman, which captures intimacy and memory with poetic sensitivity; and the Russian masterpiece Ballad of a Soldier by Grigory Chukhrai, whose quiet humanism continues to move me deeply.

I also admire Federico Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria for its compassion toward the human spirit, Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist for its visual and psychological sophistication, and Alexander Sokurov’s Russian Ark, which demonstrates how cinema itself can become a living work of art.

These films inspire me because they combine strong artistic vision with emotional truth — reminding me that cinema, like theatre, has the power to transcend language and speak directly to the soul.

Where do you look for inspiration for your films?

Always music. Throughout more than five decades of my artistic life, music has been the foundation of my creative process. I often begin not with images or dialogue, but with rhythm, tone, and emotional atmosphere. Music guides pacing, movement, and emotional structure — whether on stage or on screen. It shapes how scenes breathe, how actors move, and how audiences experience time and feeling. For me, cinema and theatre are deeply musical art forms, and every project I create grows from a musical impulse that ultimately becomes visual storytelling.

How would you rate current filmmaking?

Oleksandra Basko’s A Non-Fictional War represents my very first filmmaking endeavor. With this in mind, I consider myself a filmmaker still in development — discovering the language of cinema after a 58-year career in theater.
Every filmmaker begins with a first film ~ this is mine. What excites me about contemporary filmmaking is its openness: new technologies and hybrid forms now allow artists from different disciplines to enter cinema and experiment freely. My own journey reflects this evolution, moving from stage to screen and exploring how theatrical storytelling can find new life through film.
For me, filmmaking today is a process of continual learning, artistic risk, and creative growth.

We have completed principal photography, and the project is now entering its final and most demanding phase: post-production editing. As with my previous work, the film blends theatrical reenactment with documentary research, continuing my exploration of hybrid cinematic form.
This project represents a natural artistic progression for me — deepening my commitment to bringing literary history to contemporary audiences through an innovative fusion of stage and screen.

Confronted by the increasing threat of a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Vinnytsia midwife, spiritualist, and writer Oleksandra “Sasha” Basko began to record a real-time biography. Her powerful war diary tracked her reactions and those of her husband Slava to the outbreak of a war that would forever disrupt their lives. The result is a vivid, raw, and very personal account of wartime, set down as it happened.

A copy of Basko’s war diary made its way to New York and, through mutual friends, into the hands of New Orleans-based theater director Natasha Ramer. Ramer immediately envisioned Basko’s words as a play. She set out to adapt the diary into a theatrical script that she filmed as A Non-Fictional War.

Ramer spent her earliest years in Ukraine and then later years in Lithuania. She graduated from Moscow’s Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) before becoming one of Lithuania’s leading theater directors. She came to the United States in 1982 and, eventually, made her way to New Orleans, where she established Moscow Nights, a cultural education nonprofit. Committed to bringing the arts of East-Central Europe to Louisiana, Moscow Nights has developed a rich program of theatrical and musical events over the past 25 years. For example, a virtual live online performance of Andrei Kureichik’s Insulted. Belarus(sia) during the COVID shutdown of 2020 gave attention to the vibrant underground theatrical scene in Belarus at that time.

Ramer worked with New Orleans professional actors Erin Cessna and Casey Groves to translate the emotional core of Basko’s A Non-Fictional War to the stage and screen. The couple’s intimate dialogue begins in the days leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion. Sasha is angry, proclaiming that she doesn’t “want troops from another country to save us from ourselves.” Slava, trying to calm their domestic distress, tells her that he does not “believe Russia will start a war.” Once the war begins, Sasha’s anger grows as she cries, “they took my world away.” Slava, previously unsure that there would be a war now asks, “what if we suddenly lose the war?” Cessna and Groves add panic to the pathos of Basko’s diary.

Vinnytsia, in southwestern Ukraine, had been initially spared much of the damage inflicted on central and eastern Ukraine, having been hit by Russian rockets and drones only sporadically. But the Russians stepped up their rocket and drone attacks against this city, aiming to destroy Vinnytsia’s utilities infrastructure and raise the levels of terror in the city’s population. Basko’s diary reveals how the city had been traumatized at the outset of the war. That trauma only heightens as the conflict bears down on the hopes and fears of Ukrainians throughout the country.

In recognizing A Non-Fictional War as one of the best films at this year’s Barcelona Exceptional Film Festival and The Best Film Festival, the jurors recorded, “Theatre and cinema should never be at odds. They complement each other perfectly and Natasha demonstrates this in the wonderful feature film where the performance transcends both arts and fuses them into one, full of beauty and drama.”

Ramer adds that “we could never have achieved the level of success we did without the creativity of our cinematographer and post-production editor, Antony Sandoval, who teaches at Tulane University. Together, we meticulously crafted every scene to bring forth not just the film itself but also a vibrant spectrum of sound, color, and the unique special effects characteristic of experimental cinema.”

Basko’s written words transcend Ramer’s and Sandoval’s artistic achievement, stunning as that may be. As soon as she held Basko’s diary in her hands, Ramer realized that the young writer had captured the stark horror of war and the turmoil it inflicts on families. Basko’s brutal observations express the turbulence that war brings to everyday life. The result is a transformative journey from the depths of despair to resilience. Her diary is a stunning testament to the endurance of the human spirit, a narrative that transcends time and place. Basko converts her personal story into a universal plea to end the agony of all wars.

Ramer underscores Basko’s achievement. “While working on the play script,” she observes, “I was amazed by Sasha’s profound metaphysical New Age spiritualism; it opened my awareness to a whole new Ukraine. Throughout the film, during times of stress and need, she deeply connects with the ‘angelic’ soloist featured in a movement of Mieczław Weinberg’s “Kaddish” Symphony No. 21, 1991 performed by the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Hobart Earle. Through the music, I revealed this deep spiritualism as Sasha ascends to a higher state of being while seeking answers.”

Basko, in a most intimate exchange with her husband, compellingly speaks for millions when she writes, “As the length of the war began to be measured in weeks, I became more and more resolved in my desire to stay here on our land.” As Ramer understood, the arts capture profound longing more revealingly than any news story.

It is through these diaries that director Natasha O. Ramer adapted the story of one couple’s survival through relentless attacks by Russia as told in her production, “A Non-Fictional War.”

Ramer herself was born in Kazakhstan, formerly part of the Soviet Union, but moved to Ukraine when she was only a year old. Eventually, she studied theater as a student at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts in Moscow, met her husband later in Lithuania, and after he moved to the U.S. to teach first at Berkeley, then Yale, joined him in New Haven, where they raised their child.

Here is a summary of the interview…

From Diary to Screen: Natasha Ramer’s Journey into “Theater on Film”

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 22, 2022, was a defining moment for filmmaker Natasha Ramer. Through a friend in New York, Ramer received a war diary written by Oleksandra Basko, a young Ukrainian writer. This vivid and raw account of wartime life ignited Ramer’s vision to transform the diary into a groundbreaking theater-on-film project titled *A Non-Fictional War*.

Ramer’s process began with the careful adaptation of the diary into a theatrical script, a task that involved casting talented local actors such as Erin Cessna and Casey Groves. The team delved into Ukrainian culture, ensuring authenticity in attire and scenic design while crafting dialogue that captured the emotional depth of Basko’s experiences.

Music played a vital role, with the haunting strains of Weinberg’s Symphony № 21 “Kaddish,” performed by the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra, forming the emotional core of the production. Ramer also enlisted the expertise of Tulane Professor of Theater Antony Sandoval, who served as the film’s cinematographer and editor, bridging the gap between theater and film.

As Ramer ventured into the realm of “theater on film,” she faced numerous challenges, including capturing the intimacy of live performances on camera. Collaborative workshops and innovative filming techniques helped overcome these hurdles, resulting in a cinematic experience that resonates with audiences.

Ramer’s vision for the film extends beyond a mere depiction of war. It explores profound themes of spiritual transformation and resilience among Ukrainians, showcasing their indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.

For those interested in the complete story behind *A Non-Fictional War* and Natasha Ramer’s unique approach to filmmaking, delve into the full interview here to learn more about her creative journey and the inspiration behind this compelling project.
New Orleans, LA (June 2024) — The tranquility of an ordinary morning on February 23, 2022, was shattered for Sasha and Slava, a Ukrainian couple facing everyday struggles from child-rearing to financial worries. Below the surface of routine quarrels and mundane concerns, tension brewed over the growing dread of an invasion. Within 24 hours, their simmering fears exploded into reality as war engulfed Europe, marking a profound collision between the mundane and the catastrophic.

This stark transformation is at the heart of “Oleksandra Basko’s A Non-Fictional War,” a groundbreaking theater-on-film production by New Orleans-based Moscow Nights. Directed by Natasha O. Ramer, the film adaptation of Oleksandra Basko’s heartfelt diary, captures her turmoil in the initial days of the war. Moved by Basko’s poignant accounts amidst her own emotional turmoil, Ramer felt compelled to share the intimate narratives with a global audience.

“A Non-Fictional War” graphically depicts the abrupt plunge into conflict—emphasized by severe food shortages, the necessity of cash transactions and the constant echo of air raid sirens. Stage veterans Erin Cessna and Casey D. Groves give riveting portrayals of Sasha and Slava, exploring a vast array of emotions as they confront the grim realities of war. Through Sasha’s perspective, played by Cessna, the audience follows along on a transformative journey from depths of despair to a resilient, hopeful belief in the endurance of the human spirit.

Ramer’s personal connection to the story enriches the film’s authenticity. Having spent her formative years in Ukraine and Lithuania before moving to Moscow, Ramer’s roots in Eastern Europe are deeply embedded. Since emigrating to the U.S. in 1982 and founding Moscow Nights, she has been committed to promoting a deeper understanding of Eastern European culture through the arts.

“The invasion resonated deeply within me, igniting a desire to articulate my distress,” Ramer reveals. “Oleksandra Basko’s diary became a powerful medium to convey this profound narrative of despair and resilience.”

The film’s authenticity is meticulously upheld by a talented team, including executive director and executive producer Murrell “Ray” White, Jr. Contributions from Tulane University scholars such as Samuel C. Ramer, who translated Basko’s reflections into English, and visually captivating work by cinematographer Antony Sandoval enrich the narrative. Additional artistic elements from set and scenic designer Diana Cupsa, lighting designer Samuel Verdina, and choreographers Anthony Neuman and Jeffrey Gunshol, further elevate the production.

“A Non-Fictional War” is more than just a film; it stands as a poignant testament to the resilience found in the direst circumstances and acts as a bridge connecting distant lands with shared histories and realities.

In the wake of the tragic demise of Alexei Navalny during his imprisonment, the global community stands at a pivotal moment to amplify its voice against the unjust incarceration of political prisoners in Belarus and Russia.
Come join us for a presentation and signing featuring New Yorker writer and former New Orleans resident Howard Fishman who spent twelve years excavating the life and pursuing the story of vanished musical pioneer Connie Converse. The result is TO ANYONE WHO EVER ASKS: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse, recently chosen by Pitchfork as one of the Top 10 Music Books of 2023. Part biography, part detective story, and part inward journey, the book investigates the pioneering work of this lost songwriter, singer, scholar, artist, poet, and activist, revealing at last a major figure in American culture, overlooked until now.

The mysterious true story of Connie Converse—a mid-century New York City songwriter, singer, and composer whose haunting music never found broad recognition—and one writer’s quest to understand her life

The story of Connie Converse is a haunting musical mystery. Her recordings were too good, her story too otherworldly. She lived in New York City in the ’60s and ’70s, producing recordings that few would hear. Then, after years of attempting to make it as a musician, she simply drove off one day and was never heard from again. When Howard Fishman first heard her music, he became obsessed with finding out the truth of what happened to this pioneer singer-songwriter.

Connie’s music was groundbreaking, ahead of its time, and as a result was largely ignored by all but a close circle of friends. Howard approaches her story as both a fan and a detective, and expertly weaves a narrative of her life and music, highlighting all the ways that it has come to speak to him as both an artist and a person.

TO ANYONE WHO EVER ASKS is rife with mystery and narrative thrust, but also looks at many of the deeper questions that haunt the artistic community. What does it really mean to be successful? What does it mean to be an outsider? When did music, and the creation of art, become so reliant on rigid classifications? And, as

Fishman works closely with many of Connie’s remaining family members, what is the role of a biographer in shaping and defining another person’s legacy?
